England Head Coach Eddie Jones hailed his side’s achievement at completing a series whitewash over Australia and declared it was just the beginning for his history makers.
Jones’ side defeated Australia 44-40 in Sydney to follow up victories in Brisbane and Melbourne as England completed a 3-0 whitewash for the first time 'down under'.
However, he says the aim for his side is to now become the number one team in world rugby.
“They’ve been training since June, haven’t had a weekend off and to win that game at the end was a fantastic effort,” he said."If we are going to be the best side in the world we’ve got to be much-more consistent"
“They showed fitness, toughness and they were brave. It’s a great start for us, but only the start, we realise that.
“If we are going to be the best side in the world, which we are aiming to be we’ve got to be much-more consistent but we will get that over the next three years.”
Jones admitted to being less than satisfied with his side’s performance, having shipped 40 points but said it had been a great series against the country of his birth.
“It’s been a pleasure to be in Australia, I’m always grateful what Australia have done for me in rugby but it’s nice to beat them 3-0,” he said.
“We are not happy with our performance, we are happy with the result but we let four tries in today and we should not do that.”
FANTASTIC FARRELL
Owen Farrell contributed 24 points on the day and 66 for the series and Jones hailed his performances over the series while also thanking 2003 World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson for his work with the Saracens star.
“We’ve got to be thankful to Jonny Wilkinson for the work he has done with Owen and George Ford,” said Jones.
“George has been absolutely terrific on tour. He’s kicked well, played well, a really good performance. He is an absolutely outstanding goal kicker.”
Jones, whose side next play in the Autumn internationals, added: “We still have a long way to go, we are making baby steps in the right direction and that’s all we’ve got to do. The only challenge we have is to beat Fiji so we have a camp coming up and we’ll plan to beat Fiji.”
