Dan Cole captain Hurracaine

All Blacks hooker Dane Coles has been named Hurricanes captain for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

The 28-year-old takes over from former All Blacks centre Conrad Smith, who led the side from 2012 but has left to take up a contract in France with Pau.

Halfback and fellow All Black TJ Perenara will be vice-captain.

Coles has played 80 games for the Hurricanes since making his debut in 2009.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said that Coles' dedication and passion made him an ideal player for the leadership role.

"Dane is a proud and passionate Hurricanes player who has always led, and will continue to lead by example," said Boyd.

"He is someone who's totally committed to the club, what we stand for, and what we’re trying to achieve. He's highly respected by all the players because of the commitment and pride he shows around our camp, so we know he's the right man for the job."
